Engimono lucky figures

Meaning

Engimono ('luck objects') include the maneki-neko beckoning cat (a raised left paw invites customers, the right invites money), the daruma doll (Bodhidharma, who meditated until his limbs withered, and a figure of perseverance) and hamaya evil-breaking arrows.

Intent

They bring luck and prosperity to businesses and homes. A daruma's eyes are left blank: you paint in one when making a wish and the other when it comes true, then return it to be burned.

Significance

Engimono are central to Japanese popular culture, and the maneki-neko has become a global symbol, as has the daruma as an emblem of perseverance, used by politicians during elections.

History

Daruma dolls developed in the Edo period at Takasaki (Shōrinzan Daruma-ji, 18th century). The maneki-neko appears in the late Edo period (19th century), with legends tied to Gōtoku-ji temple in Tokyo.

Japan & Korea: the tradition

Japanese protective objects are issued by Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples: omamori, ofuda and ema, each for a named purpose and renewed each year, with old ones returned for ritual burning. Engimono (luck objects) such as maneki-neko and daruma dolls grew out of Edo-period popular culture. Ancient magatama link the modern imperial regalia to the Jōmon and Kofun eras. Korea's shamanic tradition produced bujeok paper talismans, and the norigae pendant turned protective charms into women's court jewellery.
